Big Table exists to see the lives of those working in the restaurant and hospitality industry transformed by building community and caring for those who are in crisis, transition, or falling through the cracks. Jessie Vigil is Big Table's San Diego City Director. Jesse’s life experiences include a stint in the Navy, pulling rabbits from a hat, and life as a youth director. His latest trick is caring for restaurant and hotel employees through Big Table. His passion for food includes decorating cakes, and an ongoing quest to find the best pizza, burger, and fish taco in San Diego. He enjoys watching the Padre’s, taking staycations with his wife, and eating Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt crackers. |

Lori Holt Pfeiler, a housing champion and longtime community leader, is President and CEO of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County, the organization has announced. “I believe deeply in the transformative power of housing, and the ripple effects it has,” Holt Pfeiler said. “I have seen the success a stable home can provide a family – for generations. As the new leader of the BIA, I look forward to putting my efforts to work to influence change that helps create thousands of homes in our region at all income levels. Improving the supply of housing and advocating for efficient and effective changes in the building process are important steps I’ll pursue. My affordable housing expertise will complement the work of traditional home builders, with the ultimate goal of making our region an even better place for families and business.” Holt Pfeiler replaces retiring CEO Borre Winckel, who led the BIA for 13 years. Winckel’s last day is July 16. Holt Pfeiler starts July 6. Tackling the region’s housing affordability crisis tops her priority list, she said, pointing out that across our region homes are built at the high end and the low end and nothing in the middle. That has created numerous problems, including long Riverside County to San Diego County commutes, soaring rents, and forcing seniors to stay in place. |

Please park on the street as their parking lot will be needed for the food distribution line. The best place to park is on I Street on the south side of the church campus. Enter the campus through the driveway off I Street. What we will be doing: the first hour (8:00 – 9:00 am) the volunteers will be breaking down the pallets of food and putting the food into boxes/bags that will then be distributed to the families and individuals. The drive-up and walk-up lines will open at 9:00 am and continue until the food is gone. Please note this will entail standing for up to 4 hours and possibly some lifting. Who to contact when you arrive: Johnny Viloria, Project Hand Manager. He will coordinate what area needs your assistance. Water: Water will be provided. Take a break if needed. What to wear: Comfortable clothing and shoes depending on the weather that day. Wear your Rotary t-shirt if you have one. They will provide a colored safety vest to wear but if you have one please bring it. COVID Protocols/Practices: Masks are optional so this is an individual decision to wear one or not. |

Author and Polio Survivor
Jan 27, 2023 12:10 PM
Wayne Raffesberger remembered that quote from Mark Twain and uses it as a rallying cry for the way he would live his life, as told vividly in his memoir, Thank God I Got Polio: A Life of Adventure and the Adventure of Life. While Raffesberger refers to polio in his book title, describes the physical and emotional challenges he encountered as a young boy, and acknowledges that it shaped his life, this is not so much a book about polio as it is about a person who rose to the occasion on account of it, wanting to prove something to his early-life naysayers and doubters — as well as himself — and seek out adventures that fully healthy people might be hard-pressed to undertake. |

Bring your gift basket donations for seniors to club meetings on Friday throughout February. Contact Mary Johnson or Lisa Johnson for more details. On February 10th, before our Valentine’s Day program, we will assemble 50 gift bags to be distributed to seniors through St. Paul’s. Thanks to Mary and her team, we have suggestions of items we can donate for the bags. If you don’t want to provide 50 of something, please just provide what you can. Lisa has donated 50 red bags and Cheryl has donated 50 Chik Fil A gift cards - so we are off and running! Option – make a cash donation or donate on our website and specify this project, and Mora, Cheryl, and Lisa will shop for you. There are many seniors who can’t get out for holidays and special occasions, but we can still make occasions special for them with our gifts! • Canned/non-perishable food items |
