St. Mark's Lutheran Church - Project Hand
Cash donations are used to purchase food for Project Hand which is an Emergency Assistance Food Pantry run by Lutheran Social Services on the campus of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Chula Vista. Project Hand serves the homeless and low-income families in the Chula Vista/South Bay area. Demand for assistance has increased dramatically due to COVID-19. The food is purchased from the San Diego Food Bank by the church and then church volunteers pick up the food and deliver it back to Project Hand on the church campus. Project Hand volunteers then sort and package the food on-site for distribution. The Chula Vista Rotary Foundation has donated $1,500 in April and $500 in October of this year to Project Hand. We have also supported them this year with volunteers picking up the food and delivering it back to the church.
The donation is made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church into a designated fund for Project Hand. Checks should be made out to “St. Mark’s Lutheran Church” and reference “Project Hand” in the memo section. Checks can be mailed to Diane Wages at her home address which is on the membership roster.
As you know we have supported Feeding San Diego over a number of years both with donations as well as hands-on support in the past separating food dry goods for distribution to charitable organizations throughout San Diego. This past April we provided Feeding San Diego with a $1,000 donation for the COVID-19 Response Fund and in October we provided them with a $500 donation for their Thanksgiving Food Campaign.
All Rotarians now have an opportunity to provide support to this organization that thousands of San Diegans have turned to for food assistance through their various direct distribution sites as well as the numerous local organizations that rely on Feeding San Diego to provide and distribute food to tens of thousands of individuals and families that are in need.
Rotarians thank you for making and continuing to make a difference in our community! It’s appreciated more than you can imagine, especially by the individuals, children, and families we help.
Since we won’t be participating in the “House” meal program this year as the Ronald McDonald House is only open to the families staying there plus the staff and a few volunteers. This would be a good opportunity for individuals to donate and keep meals free to the families. As you recall the Chula Vista Rotary Foundation did donate $1,000 to the Ronald McDonald House in September to provide meals and to-go containers for the families.
