Laura Pecenco, Ph.D. is Founding Director of Project PAINT: The Prison Arts INiTiative, a visual arts program operating at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility and soon at California State Prison, Centinela, and Assistant Professor of Sociology at San Diego Miramar College.

Stephanie Oldengarm is a senior at the Thurgood Marshall College of UC San Diego, majoring in Sociology, with a concentration in Law & Society. She looks forward to graduating from UCSD this March and hopes to attend law school in the fall to pursue a career in criminal law within the nonprofit sector.

This presentation, by Founding Director Dr. Laura Pecenco and Program Assistant Stephanie Oldengarm, will highlight the work of Project PAINT: The Prison Arts INiTiative, a prison visual arts organization. Project PAINT has operated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility for five years and is expanding to California State Prison, Centinela in Spring 2019. We will discuss the history and expansion of Project PAINT and Arts-in-Corrections in California, our course offerings and program operation, notable exhibitions and community events, and research and program outcomes.
