Benjamin was born and raised in San Diego. He grew up in Tierrasanta where he attended Tierrasanta Elementary School, De Portola Middle School, and finally graduated valedictorian from Serra High School. While in high school he was active in the Key Club (Kiwanis) and completed his Eagle Scout rank with the Boy Scouts of America. He attended both National University and Brigham Young University for a degree in accountancy, graduating summa cum laude.
Benjamin worked for the County of San Diego for six years, becoming an associate accountant overseeing the procurement card program for the entire Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). In 2011, he and his father purchased a tax office, Bonita Tax Service, that has been in the community since 1978. He and his father, both Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), formed Koala Financial, Inc. They expanded the services of the tax offices to include accounting, wealth management, investments, retirement planning, insurance, and real estate, being licensed for all these services. They took on Benjamin's brother as a partner when he retired as an Army captain in 2015 and got his tax preparation, insurance, and investment licenses to add to his masters degree in procurement. The family business also has a full-time enrolled agent (EA) on staff as well as their office manager.
Benjamin has a six-year-old stepson and a four-month-old son. He and his wife, Fiona, live in Mission Valley. They love to travel and adventure together, with upcoming travel plans this year including Cape Town (where she is from), Johannesburg, London, Vienna, Munich, and Paris. Benjamin enjoys the outdoors including hiking, backpacking, kayaking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, biking, skiing, and more. He also grew up performing with Christian Youth Theater (CYT) and has a love for the arts and music. His favorite activity is spending time with his family and his little ones.
